Book Review: Brilliance by Marcus Sakey

I read A LOT. I’m professional. It’s not abnormal for me to get through a book a day. It’s an addiction and I’m a junkie.

So as you can imagine I get through a lot of books – I currently have over 1,000 on my kindle and only about 10 are unread. But it is extremely rare for me to become completely immersed and obsessed by a book so that it stays with me echoing around my brain and delighting me days after I’ve finished it. The last to do so was Write, Publish, Repeat (which I wrote about here) and now Brilliance – which couldn’t be more aptly named.

Modern Day Master Wordsmith

Marcus Sakey is, simply put, a master word-smith. His wizardry with words create such gorgeous descriptions that I found myself wanting to gorge on them. It has been a long, long time since I read such beautiful descriptive narrative.  The book premise is really interesting and the story fabulous but it’s his use of words and phrases, to describe things, that is so unique and mind-blowing. Even now, days later, I’m in awe and can’t wait to start the sequel – The Better World.

Calling all writers – this guy’s novel is a master class in descriptive narrative http://ctt.ec/dHW6E+ #writing – Click to Tweet

Why Are You Still Here? Go Read This Book.

Brilliance is the first book of Marcus Sakey that I’d come across but I’m eager to read his entire catalogue of work and I can’t recommend reading this book enough. You needn’t worry that he may be a uber describer, like Thomas Hardy, he’s not. He’s precise and keeps the story going at a good pace, he just chooses his words, and compiles his phrases in a glorious and unique manner that I am sure will delight you, as it did me. I am not one to write book reviews normally but was compelled to share this wonderful book.

For all writers reading this – his books could be a master-class in description and worth reading for that alone.

An absolute MUST read. Brilliance, by name, and more than brilliant reading. Check it out – http://ctt.ec/VrvcX+ – Click to Tweet

In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in—and betray his own kind. Get it here*

A Better World by Marcus SakeyA Better World by Marcus Sakey

The brilliants changed everything. Since 1980, 1% of the world has been born with gifts we’d only dreamed of. For thirty years the world has struggled with a growing divide between the exceptional…and the rest of us.

Now a terrorist network led by brilliants has crippled three cities. Supermarket shelves stand empty. 911 calls go unanswered. Fanatics are burning people alive.

Nick Cooper has always fought to make the world better for his children. As both a brilliant and an advisor to the president of the United States, he’s against everything the terrorists represent. But as America slides toward a devastating civil war, Cooper is forced to play a game he dares not lose—because his opponents have their own vision of a better world.

And to reach it, they’re willing to burn this one down. Get it here*
